    Dear Jane & Jake,

You guys are SO lucky. Your eyes are such awesome colors! Not like mine.
I love your gray eyes, Jane. And Jake, you have eyes that change colors almost like magic. Blue and green, and sometimes there’s even a little bit of pink or purple or other colors in them. That is so cool!
But my eyes are just plain old brown. Yuck. I sure wish I could change them so I could have awesome eyes like you guys do.

    Thanks for reading my letter,

    Your friend,
    Karen, age 8 (Chicago, IL)

    Hey, Karen!
Guess what? Your eyes are awesome too. Do you want to why? Okay, Jake wants to explain the first part to you.
Like Jane said, your eyes are awesome too because—as my dad, who is a color scientist, taught me—lots of times colors that look like one color are actually made up of different colors or shades of color. Seeing colors inside a color depends on the surrounding light. Do you want to try an experiment? Grab a mirror and look at your eyes. Brown, right? Then walk to another room with brighter light or outside (if it’s daytime, of course) and look at your eyes again. Now what do you see? Your eyes will probably look different. Here’s Jane again. She wants to tell you more.
Jake is right! One day, I looked closely at my friend Nerissa’s brown eyes. I was so surprised—and so was she! They’re not just plain brown. Nerissa’s eyes also have an a-a-mazing gold color in them. Guess what? Lots of eyes that look brown actually have shades of lighter brown, gold, or green in them! (Jake says to tell you that this color is called “hazel.”)
Try our little experiment, and let us know what happens. We’re sure you’re going to see how awesome your eyes really are.
    Love,
Jane (who is NOT Plain!) & Jake

P.S. Oracle says some brown eyes (that are not hazel) are a deep, dark brown color—like chocolate. Yummy!
